Historic Rancho Santa Fe or what is commonly known as “The Covenant’ was initially developed in 1922 as a planned community of country estates on 6,200 acres by the Santa Fe Land Development Company. In 1921, architect Lilian Rice was chosen to develop the community’s master plan, while constructing the village center, as well as several homes. In 1923, the RSF Inn was constructed in the Spanish Revival Style and has since been owned by local families since 1940.
Rancho Santa Fe Elementary School District is a public school district and it consists of only one site, R. Roger Rowe School, which comprises a public elementary school (K–5) and a public middle school (6–8). In 1989, “The Covenant” of Rancho Santa Fe was registered as California Historical Landmark #982 for its status as a historic planned community.

Fairbanks Ranch residential community is located on the south side of Rancho Santa Fe on San Dieguito Road. The custom home neighborhood is named after screen idol Douglas Fairbanks Sr., as he and Mary Pickford owned the property in the 1920's. Years later, Ray Watt, a Santa Monica developer, purchased and set out to create an elite community. Watt created his vision by subdividing the 1,240 acre property into 622 estate home sites and began selling the lots in 1981.Watt then set forth to develop his vision of Fairbanks Ranch Country Club (one mile from the residential community), which he felt would enhance the lifestyles and the value of the properties of these community residents. The average lot size is 1 acre and lushly landscaped, with homes ranging in size from 3,500 to 20,000 sq.ft. and selling from $3.5M to $20M.
The community offers armed-guard security, pristine lake with waterfall, gracious clubhouse with lake view terraces and a new commercial kitchen, 75 acres of park-like grounds, stunning equestrian center with multiple rings, riding and walking trails, 4 tennis courts, 4 pickleball courts, playground, sand volleyball, basketball, a picnic area with barbecue facilities, 9 hole putting green and a sparkling stream with fitness par course. The community plans social events for children and adults throughout the year, including Summer Concerts by the lake, classic car show, holiday party with snow & sledding, Halloween parade & party, Friday cocktail parties and Las Damas de Fairbanks is a women's philanthropic group that meets monthly.
The opening of nearby Fairbanks Ranch Country Club coincided with the 1984 Olympic Equestrian Endurance Event held on the property. The event took place on August 1, 1984. A bronze sculpture named ‘Victory’s Gate’ was created to commemorate the event, and this work of art permanently stands at the entrance gate of the private Fairbanks Ranch Country Club.
